Interface and Functionality!
The interface and layout of the photo editing tools in SumoPaint resembles Photoshop or Pixlr to a great extent.
Keeping that fact aside, it is quite simple and effective to use. What is really satisfying is that it is free from distracting advertising. It is something that is quite rare even among the best free online photo editors. Online platforms without ads are bliss!
The SumoPaint app offers both a free version with limited functionality and a Pro version with all the photo editing features.
But, Sumopaint photo editor free version is practically unusable, as about 80 percent of all tools are unavailable. What developers had in mind while setting such strict limits is dubious.
It is worth noting that there is no Sumo Paint mobile application that could simplify the work in situations where you don’t have access to your laptop or it isn’t functional. Who knows, their developers might come with something exciting in recent years!
The Desktop Version!
Sumo Paint is a very simple photo editing platform for basic image retouching and digital painting.

Similarity with Photoshop
The SumoPaint photo editor offers you two different options for importing images:
- You can do it via URL
- From your PC.
It successfully downloads RAW files without any issues. The editor also supports PSD, PNG, JPEG, JPG, and GIF formats. That’s a plus point as most of the major photo files are supported in this software.
The interface of this web application successfully complies with the established standards for a classy application.
The toolbar containing all the essential tools is located on the left of the home page. The center consists of the editing area. And on the right is the panel with history, layers, color palette, and all other alternatives.
There is also an attractive and useful menu bar on the top and a property bar for custom selected tools.
The tools are conveniently located and, what is most important and worth mentioning, 80 percent of the entire window is reserved for the working space.
In this software, you will find numerous useful brushes, fills, gradients, and auto-generated shapes. Dozens of these filters allow you to generate beautiful effects. And what’s most exciting is that all of it can be done through a single click.
All processing, even the most complex, is implemented instantly! It saves your time a lot.
Custom Brushes for Wonderful Artists
SumoPaint is much more focused on drawing rather than photo editing if researched in detail.
But it is not in the ability of the performance of a complex image processing solution like Adobe Photoshop.
One of the best things that definitely stands out and is worth mentioning is that it has a huge variety of brushes, brush styles, brush effects, as well as a large number of advanced settings.
These are somethings you definitely don’t wanna miss out on!
Advanced Layer Settings
In this section, we will look into the advanced layer settings of
Sumopaint photo editor.

If you have ever used Canva, you can relate to it more.

These SumoPaint features are pretty good, and it offers a lot of advanced settings.
The tools are implemented in the same style as Adobe Photoshop, which allows you to manage features like
- Drop shadow
- Inner shadow
- Outer glow
- Inner glow
- Bevel
- Color overlay
- Stroke
- Gradient bevel
- Gradient glow
- And many more!
Gradient bevel and the gradient fill tool display a sample and allow you to see what the gradient will look like before you apply it.
Colour Correction Tools
Using the adjustment tool, you can make changes to factors such as brightness/contrast, color balance, color temp, curves, gradient map, hue/saturation, and levels.
People tried several of them and reported some flaws in these tools.
For example, After activating the brightness contrast tool, two sliders appear, and nothing more. The sliders are pretty badly designed. The insensitive setup of sensitivity is too high.
It is always better to change the numbers manually when it comes to this application.
Retouching of a selected area is also not available while editing photos. This makes it worse.
They could have worked on the detailing better. Colour balance and color temperature follow the same principle.
The Curves tool is comparatively designed better for working, but it also lacks some details. The detailing of this instrument ends with the choice of preset curves and color channels. Only four colors are available. It feels limited by the color palette.
Besides, after setting the required parameters, people noticed that the responsiveness and processing speed were very low which makes it worse.
The photo twitched convulsively before the change was applied. Though the tool completes its task, it performs at a lower level than other desktop photo editors. If you have a lower-end computer this is one of the best you can have
The auto levels feature is pretty efficient and serves the purpose. The tool does its job accurately.
When experimented with, the function was slightly overdone and highlighted the tone of the face too much. But in general, it made the image a little better. You can always tweak the auto adjustments later on.
Advanced Features
After reviewing and testing several filters from its collection, I was quite impressed that the detail and elaboration of most filters correspond to the high level set by Lightroom. It was something unexpected. Samsung sync manager for mac.
Some of the collections are:
- 3D effects
- Blur
- Distort
- Edge detection
- Light effects
- Noise
- Pixelate
- Sharpen
- Stylize
- Texture
- Fractal
What is the mac word processing program called. After selecting the filter you like, a menu appears in which you can adjust the effect in more detail using several sliders.
Some of the factors like distance radius, focus, tilt, rotation, bumpiness, and atmosphere can be easily controlled through sliders. It is convenient to try all of them and choose what’s best for you.
In addition to that, you can also choose one of the available artificial light sources: intense light up, intense light right, intense light down, soft light, hard light, camera flash, metallic relief, and more.
This feature was designed and implemented well by Sumopaint, but the responsiveness and speed of image post-processing are quite disappointing!
Conclusion
In conclusion, when compared to any other photo editing software, it would reach the Adobe class, but would definitely beat applications like Paint.net.
So, this was an honest review of Sumopaint. I have included all the major takeaways and drawbacks. I hope you gained enough knowledge and it would be of great use to you.

Happy Editing!
Photoshop is the best photo editing tool but it’s only available for Windows and Mac OS X. The only choice before Linux and Chrome OS users is to look for an alternative if they want a good photo editor. Thankfully, there are some great Photoshop alternatives available for Chromebook. There are some really capable Chromebook extensions like Pixlr, Polarr, GIMP on rollApp, and Sumo Paint that you can use in place of Photoshop.
Adobe has been behind quite a few very popular apps used by the professionals. Specifically, Adobe’s PDF document format, and the reader, their video editing tool Adobe Premier and every professional’s only choice, Adobe Photoshop. Adobe generally makes software for macOS and Windows, which means Linux users are generally left out. However, it isn’t like Linux doesn’t have quality alternatives to Windows apps. In case you missed, somehow, there’s a new kid in town, Google’s light-weight browser-based Chrome OS. Chrome OS has been gaining market share despite not seeming very useful when it first launched. Part of this is because it is just a browser, and most of the apps run in the browser rather than standalone apps. It’s Mozilla’s dream, in Google colors.
Much of Google’s consumer base for the Chromebooks are schools and students. They need light-weight, cheap, portable machines, and Chromebook gives them that. There are some cool Chromebook tips that you should also check out.
When it comes to professional work though, like video editing or even photo editing, dedicated standalone apps such as Photoshop, GIMP, Krita, Paint.NET still reign supreme. This is where Chrome OS takes some heavy pounding from the competition. Google has managed to replace most of Microsoft Office with its own Google products but image editing is still a relatively new field for Google.
How To Use Sumo Paint
The Mountain View company does have Snapseed and Google Photos for Android, but there isn’t a Chrome OS counterpart. Not like the photo editing capabilities of either of them are anywhere close to Photoshop anyway. Chrome OS does have a native image editing tool for some basic photo editing. Like Android, Chrome OS does have a gallery app that is easy to miss since it isn’t listed separately like other apps. The gallery lives as a part of the Files app. When you open an image in Files, it launches in the gallery app. You can click the edit icon here to get access to some basic image editing tools. These include cropping, brightness/contrast control, rotate and undo/redo. There’s also an auto-fix button that tries to “fix” the image using its own algorithms. It’s a hit or a miss.
If you want to have more tools at your disposal for editing images on your Chromebook, or your laptop running Chromium OS, here are some Adobe Photoshop alternatives for Chromebook. Here are no less than 100 Chromebook shortcuts and function keys that you must know to master your computer.
1. Pixlr Editor
Sumo Paint 2.0
Pixlr is probably the best Photoshop alternative for Chromebook. There is a Pixlr Express, Pixlr-o-matic and a Pixlr Editor on the Chrome Web Store. We’re discussing the Pixlr Editor here. This is probably the closest you can get to an Adobe Photoshop like look, feel, and functionality. You’ll still get that Chrome interface on top though so there’s that. You can get rid of it technically by selecting View > Fullscreen but then nothing kills multitasking quite like Full-screen apps with no method to directly switch between them. There are still many things you can’t do with Pxlr Editor but there are also many things that you can do.
It has a number of tools that Photoshop or GIMP provides such as crop, move, marques, lasso, wand tool, pencil, pen quick select, brush, etc. It supports layers which is a big requirement if you’re looking for some advanced level editing.
If you want to enjoy some great apps, do not forget to check out our tutorial on installing Linux apps on Chrome OS.
2. Sumo Paint
Sumo Paint is similar in terms of the interface in that is too has a side column with all the common tools you may need. Pixlr Editor is still probably the better choice. Sumo Paint also requires you to sign up in order to use it at all so that’s quite the downside.
3. Polarr Photo Editor
Polarr is another Photoshop alternative for Chromebook but it is slightly different than others. Not only is it an offline app unlike the other two, but it is also quite different from Photoshop. It’s more like Adobe Lightroom than photoshop and does not support layers. Yet, here it is on this list simply because it is something you might need often even if you do already have either of the above two image editors. As stated, Pixlr Editor is leagues behind Photoshop, and Sumo Paint is even slightly behind that. So when you need some amazing easy to use filters, that work offline Polarr is probably the best choice.
Seldom does one come across an app on Chrome OS as polished and mature as Polarr. It even supports the RAW image format which is what any serious photographer would use. There are several filters/presets that would help you get the desired look Instagram look.
There are some other apps available on the browser-based platform, especially if yours can run Android apps. While those are really great apps, they can ‘t possibly be recommended as Photoshop alternatives for Chromebook. However, if you still want some other choice than those mentioned above, you can try GIMP on rollApp.
